reasons why Frozen has become an obsession in our house (can you releate?)

Frozen.  No, I don’t mean the weather outside although it would be appropriate during this colder and snowier than normal winter.  I’m referring to the Disney movie.  If you have kids of any age, I’m sure you’ve seen it.  The movie is good, really good.  More like a musical complete with Broadway stars playing the main roles.  The music is amazing.  I’m sure it will be on Broadway within a couple of years.    In case you haven’t seen it, below is a scene from the movie.

visiting super bowl boulevard

Earlier this week my friend and I went to check out Super Bowl Boulevard in NYC.  We figured it was a once in a lifetime experience.

the indian cave

In the early 1900’s archaeologists surveyed a small cave known as the Fairy Hole.  In it they found pottery pieces, flint, and arrow heads; evidence that the cave was once used by the Lenape Indians.  The Lenape were the native people who lived in Northwest New Jersey.  The cave is thought to have been used as a resting spot for the Lenape as they traveled or hunted.  It is also in close proximity to several burial sites, so it could also have been a religiously important site. back to reality or (I hope) how to avoid it

Well, it’s Monday and it’s truly back to reality.  The holidays and vacation are over.  This year they seemed to stretch out forever thanks to a longer than usual break from school, vacation days, and a snowstorm. Winter Storm Hercules.  That was the name given to Friday’s storm.  It left our world covered in a blanket of white and, by Saturday, the sun was glistening off the snow like a thousand diamonds.    The sky was a crystal clear blue; the kind of clear that you can only get on cold winter days and the picture it created was a whitewashed world where anything is possible.  I was ready to move into 2014 holding onto that viewpoint.  Yes 2014 will contain many highs and lows, things that I cannot even imagine right now, but the blank clean slate before me held the magic of possibility.

But today rain has washed away the snow and the promise of the coldest temperatures in decades has everyone talking.  Continue reading “back to reality or (I hope) how to avoid it”

nyc at christmas

I work in New York City.  I have to go in (from New Jersey) usually around 2 days a week.  NYC, to me, has become traffic and crowds and parking garages and more traffic.  My days in the city revolve around choosing the best way in to avoid traffic, sitting unmoving trying to get to my next call, and deciding between driving around the block in a vain attempt to find a parking spot on the street vs parking in an overpriced garage.  It strips away any of the fun that is NYC.  Many days my favorite view is the NYC skyline in my rear view mirror as I am back in New Jersey (yes I do realize that there are not many people who would be happy to be in NJ…)

But this Christmas  my friend and I decided to bring our daughters in for a girls weekend!  It was a great way to see New York through the eyes of a tourist again; to see all that it really has to offer.  To see it through my 10 year old daughter’s eyes!

a hike of legends and death

Last month, on a beautiful fall day, we decided to go on a hike.  The day was perfect: bright blue skies to serve as the perfect backdrop to the reds and oranges and golds of the changing leaves.  The day was unseasonably warm which was a good thing because we were headed to a corner of New Jersey known for its history of death and mystery.

august is for fun fridays

Summer is flying by and we haven’t done anything particularly exciting this year.  So, I decided that every Friday during the month of August is Fun Friday.  We will have an adventure, big or small, on Friday!

So, today I got together with my sister and we did a 3 state whirlwind tour.  New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania all in one day!  Okay so I live within 15 minutes of those states, but it is very adventure-y sounding.

adventure in san antonio: there’s more than the alamo

This time last week I was in San Antonio.  I hear it’s a great vacation spot.  But I wasn’t there on vacation, I was there for 8 days of meetings with my company.  Eight long days of meetings and tests and certifications!  On Saturday, though, we were free to do what we wanted.  So my friend Amy came down from Austin and we were off to explore the city! why lyme disease really ruins everything

I glanced down at my arm and my stomach dropped.  There it was, attached tightly to my upper arm, a fully engorged deer tick.  Since it was 7am I knew it had been on me all night.  My husband pulled the tick off me (it came off way too easily) and “Lyme disease” flashed through my head.  But, we were in the early morning rush, so I put it out of my head and moved on.

Ticks are insidious around here.  Everywhere!  If you are outside in a field or wooded area for any amount of time, you will have ticks.  Since we are outside so much and do a lot of hiking, ticks are a common occurrence.   I daily pull ticks from my kids and cats.  It’s just something that we’ve learned to live with, another benefit of living in New Jersey (the highest property taxes in the country is the #1 benefit).

About a week later two red welts had formed on my arm at the tick bite site.  My husband said, “you know, that’s probably Lyme.  Do something about it.”  But, it was the end of the school year and we were getting ready to head to Cape May for a few days.  Life was busy, so I blew it off.  Continue reading “why lyme disease really ruins everything”

an elephant on the jersey shore

The Jersey Shore!  Home to sun, surf, sand, and elephants.

Elephants?!!

That’s what I thought when my sister asked me if we wanted to join them on a visit to Lucy the Elephant on our way down to Cape May.  “It’s only the oldest example of Zoomorphic Architecture out there”, my brother-in-law said. I can’t resist anything old and unique so of course I said yes! Continue reading “an elephant on the jersey shore”
